| Most visiting farang surfers had already headed home by December when the surf is typically dead flat. Tom has lived in Patong for years and keeps a diligent watch for any indicators of swell. Friday the 13th of December 2002 was his reward when a freak swell hit, along with offshore winds. Unfortunately the original digital photos were lost, but I managed to save the email copies he sent with the following message. "Check out freak swell that hit today. Who says friday the 13th is unlucky. It was two feet bigger in the afternoon, and totally makeable. I got at least 4 perfect, clean, long tuberides today. More than I've had in 15 years surfing here." |
